In 1954, Delta Zeta adopted Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., as their national philanthropy benefactor. This is the only university in the world devoted exclusively to the deaf and hearing and impaired. Delta Zeta will continue to assist Gallaudet as long as there is a need.
At the 1983 Convention, another philanthropy benefactor, which had been assisted by Delta Zetas locally, was added to our Speech and Hearing Help Program. The House Ear Institute in Los Angeles is dedicated to research and training ear specialists in newer methods of diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear. Once again, Delta Zeta is helping to answer a need.
Over the summer of 2004, Delta Zeta adopted another national philanthropy which is Early Infant Screening.

n 1973 The Starkey Hearing Foundation started with a simple premise: "Alone we can't do much. But, together we can change the world." With "So the World May Hear" as his goal, Starkey Hearing Foundation founder William F. Austin built an organization upon this vision. Today The Starkey Hearing Foundation delivers more than 20,000 hearing aids annually through more than 150 hearing missions a year in countries stretching from the United States to Vietnam. In addition to giving the gift of hearing, The Starkey Hearing Foundation promotes hearing health awareness while supporting research and education. The Foundation is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Delta Zeta Sorority announced the program at the 2006 National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The Sorority's collegiate and alumnae chapters will assist with The Starkey Foundation's "Hear Now" program by collecting hearing aids for persons with limited financial resources. The program was launched in the fall of 2006, enabling Sorority members to support the important work that The Starkey Hearing Foundation does, including the distribution of refurbished hearing aids in underprivileged areas in the U.S. and around the world.
Adopted in June 2006 at the Delta Zeta National Convention, The Painted Turtle is the newest addition to our national philanthropies. Although it does not deal with speech and hearing, it seemed appropriate because the turtle is Delta Zeta?s official mascot. The Painted Turtle is a medical specialty camp and family care center for children who have chronic or life-threatening illnesses.
The Painted Turtle is a member of The Hole in the Wall Gang Association of camps co-founded by actor Paul Newman. To date these camps have helped over 70,000 children worldwide. Delta Zeta will contribute items to the campers as well as send sisters to volunteer with the children.
