Locally, the Beta Delta Chapter, volunteers at Brennen Elementary in Columbia, S.C. with the hearing impaired classes. These classes are specially designed to provide services in a self-contained setting to students ages 3 through second grade with varying degrees of hearing impairments. Students in third through fifth grade attend grade level appropriate classes for PE and Art. They also attend Science Lab, Drama, and Music as a self-contained class.
The sisters plan activities to do with the children that are hands on and fun. In the past students have painted pumpkins, decorated cookies and designed gingerbread houses. Sisters try to learn some sign language while they are there and the students are excited to teach it. The sisters of Delta Zeta at USC love going to Brennen whenever they can.

In order to raise money for all of our philanthropies, Delta Zeta hosts an annual Turtle Tug. This is a tug-of-war competition over pits of Jell-O. Our chapter gathers a variety of participants from Greek organizations and campus clubs to community stores and offices. Not only does Turtle Tug benefit our national benefactors, but also our local philanthropy, the hearing impaired classes at Brennen Elementary School.

In 2004, our members learned what it means to come to the aid of a sister. One of our sisters, Caroline Terry, was diagnosed with Leukemia and was in desperate need for a bone marrow transfusion/transplant. Our chapter collaborated and successfully organized a bone marrow drive in both the fall and spring semester. The Sweet Caroline Bone Marrow Drives has tested over 800 people from all over the Columbia area. These events gained the attention of other DZ chapters and as well as recognition from around the community.
